I’m finding it hard to make friends

Answer

Hi there, you are very welcome to Ask Alex.

Thank you for getting in touch. We understand that it can be quite difficult for anyone to share how they’re feeling and what they are experiencing but we also know how important it is to talk about our thoughts and emotions.

From what you have said, it sounds like you would like to make some friends but that you are finding it hard. Making friends can be both exciting and nerve wrecking. It’s okay to feel this way, it’s a normal response to a somewhat challenging situation, one that requires us to be rather vulnerable. When trying to make friends it is important that we choose people who help us to feel safe and comfortable in their company. It’s important that the people we call our friends are kind, supportive and respectful – remember, this goes both ways – and it helps if you like to do things together or have some interests in common.

You might want to try out the following tips when attempting to make new friends. Try smiling at people in the corridors at school or at other social activities as this helps you come across as a friendly, approachable person and they are more likely to be relaxed and comfortable in your presence. When trying to make new friends, it can also be a good idea to join a youth club or a sporting group, this way you might meet people who are in a similar position to you. You can find more helpful tips here: https://www.childline.ie/do-you-struggle-to-make-friends-here-are-a-few-things-that-might-help/ and here: https://www.childline.ie/how-to-build-healthy-friendships-and-relationships/.
