Hello there and thank you for contacting Ask Alex.
We know that it can be difficult to open up about how you are feeling, so thank you for reaching out and sharing with us. No question is ever a waste of our time. Each young person and their question are worthwhile to us.
It is completely understandable to feel nervous or scared about introducing your boyfriend to your parents, especially if they speak a different language. However, it is important to remember that communication is key in any relationship.
Before making the decision about breaking up with your boyfriend, try talking to him about your concerns. Let him know that you are worried about how your parents will react and that you are feeling a bit apprehensive. He may be able to offer some reassurance or suggest ways to make the introduction easier.
It is also worth considering whether your fear of your parents’ reaction is based on actual past experiences or simply a fear of the unknown. Is this the first boyfriend that you have introduced to your parents? Remember that your parents likely want to see you happy and will be supportive of your choices. If this is not the case, you do have the right to get support from elsewhere. Maybe you could talk to a trusted adult who can help to you gain perspective or insight into your feelings and your relationship. Perhaps they could help you talk to your parents also.
Ultimately, the decision to break up with someone should be based on how you feel about the whole relationship, not just one aspect of it. If you truly care for your boyfriend and enjoy spending time with him, don’t let your fear hold you back. Trust your feelings and take one step at a time.
