I want to leave home

Your Question

I want to leave home

Answer

Hello, and thank you for reaching out to Ask Alex.

We appreciate your willingness to talk with us, even though we understand that it can be challenging to be completely honest about what’s happening in your life.

You mentioned that you’re considering leaving home, and we’re truly sorry to hear that. There are numerous resources available to provide guidance on this matter. There is an article on the Childline website about running away which may be helpful for you to read before you make any decisions, www.childline.ie/why-its-never-a-good-idea-to-run-away-from-home/. For information about legal ages, including the age at which you can move out, you could read this article by Spunout: spunout.ie/life/your-rights/legal-ages-in-ireland/.

However, since we don’t have the details of your situation or age, it’s advisable to speak with a social worker to explore your options and determine the best course of action for you. There is a website, Changing Futures, created by young people for young people who have been in contact with Túsla (the Child and Family Agency in Ireland), which provides information about the help they’ve received. You can find more information here: changingfutures.ie/.

How would you feel about giving us a call at Childline to discuss your situation? Childline offers a confidential listening service. Our team is here to listen without judgment or imposing decisions on you. We’ll discuss available options with you. Whenever you’re ready to share your thoughts and feelings, we’re available seven days a week, around the clock. You can reach us by phone at 1800 66 66 66 or online at www.childline.ie/ (simply click the orange Live Chat tab to start a chat).

Thank you once again for reaching out, and remember, we’re always here to listen.
