Is it possible to end your life, and really do it?

Your Question

Hi, sorry to bother you with this.. but can it ever be possible to want to end your life and really do it? I feel one day soon I would end my life.. I picture it in my head how and I’ve decided that is how I would like to die. I’ve lived a hard life and I’m 16 now so I don’t want to live anymore..

Answer

Hi there,

Thank you so much for contacting us today. We appreciate you trusting us with such a big and personal question.

Would we be right in saying that you are having suicidal thoughts and that these thoughts are occurring more often now than before?

Firstly, we would like to say how brave you are being honest and open about how you feel as we know how tough it can be for young people to share their experiences. Secondly, you mentioned that you are 16 and have lived a hard life. As you haven’t detailed what has been hard for you, we want you to know that you have certain rights as a young person in Ireland. You have the right to be heard and to be respected, you have rights to healthcare, education and certain living conditions and you have the right to be safe. We hope that knowing that your rights will be useful in getting any help you may need to live a more comfortable and happy life.

Thoughts around ending one’s life can occur to anyone at any time, and sometimes the cause of these thoughts can be due to something going wrong for you in your life or they may occur “out of nowhere”. Remember, you might not always feel this way, and you do not need to act on these thoughts. You can read more about suicidal and suicidal thoughts on the Childline website here: https://www.childline.ie/suicide/

Would you consider sharing your thoughts around ending your life with an adult you trust? You might have someone in your family you could chat to or someone at school. Perhaps talking to someone you don’t know might be easier. Organisations such as https://jigsaw.ie/ and https://spunout.ie/ might be a good starting point for you. There is also Pieta House, an organisation that deals exclusively with thoughts of suicide and self-harming behaviours. You can find out about their services here: https://www.pieta.ie/

Here at Childline, there is a team of people ready to listen to you whenever you are ready to share your thoughts and feelings. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can contact us via phone: 1800,66,66 66, text: 50101 or through our webchat.

We would love to hear from you so please get in touch.

All the best,

Alex.
