Alex's Answer

I only want to hurt myself

Your Question

What if I don’t want to hurt anyone but myself

Answer

Hi and welcome to Ask Alex,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your inner thoughts and worries. We understand how hard it can be to talk about this, but it’s so important that we take the time to do it, as we are all entitled to have support and guidance to help us find our way through things we don’t understand.

You have said, “what if I don’t want to hurt anyone but myself?” Why do you feel the need to hurt yourself? There must be a lot of negative things going on in your mind to want to hurt yourself. Can you look back to when these feelings began? Is there anything that might have triggered these thoughts? It is an impossible task to think that you won’t hurt anyone else when you hurt yourself; those closest to you will worry and hurt if they know you are.

Being in a dark place where you feel that hurting yourself is an acceptable thing must be a very lonely and scary place to be. We would be concerned for your mental health and think that it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your GP. If this is something that you feel and struggle with every day, please know that there are many different supports available to you. Services include: www.Tusla.iewww.spunout.iewww.jigsaw.iewww.pieta.ie, CAHMS through the www.hse.ie website. This is one of the most important times for you to link with the service that can guide you through these thoughts.

Another outlet available to you for discussing what is going on for you is the Childline Team. You can contact them by phone at 1800 66 66 66 or through our Live Chat on www.childline.ie. You can start a chat by clicking on the Orange Tab on the right-hand side of your screen. Childline services are free and confidential, and are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

We really hope that you see you are not alone in this and that there are many supports available. Please continue on the path you are on and reach out to them.

Look after yourself,
Alex
