Answer

Hi there and welcome to ask Alex,

We understand that it can be difficult to reach out and take the first step by asking for help.

You say you want to stop gambling and are looking for help in doing this.

Gambling is an act which involves betting money or sometimes personal belongings with the aim of winning a reward. This act can result in a win or a loss. There is more information on what gambling is by following this link: www.childline.ie/gambling/

In Ireland the legal age for people to engage in gambling is 18 years of age and you must be 16 years of age to engage in amusements, fun fairs and online gaming. However, people of all ages can be affected by gambling, and you have the right to support.

Have you been able to speak to anyone about how you are feeling? Is there a trusted adult in your life who you feel you can talk to? A trusted adult may be a parent/carer, family member, neighbour or family friend. It can be difficult to talk about how we are feeling but you have taken the first step in reaching out for help.

Here at Childline, we are always here to listen, and you can talk about whatever you want. Childline is a free, confidential and non-judgemental service. You can contact us by free phone on 1800 66 66 66 or online chat at www.childline.ie

Take Care,

Alex
