Alex's Answer

I have scoliosis and I don't know what to do

Your Question

Hi Alex! Very sorry to bother you. I have mild scoliosis in my lumbar area. It’s not sore or anything but it’s a bit embarrassing, and I’m scared it might restrict me from doing things I like. I heard that doing certain sports can impact it negatively and I don’t want that to happen. I love volleyball and want to play it but my family members said it might worsen it. I don’t know what to do. Should I play volleyball or not? Should I go to a doctor? Do certain exercises? Thank you very much!

Answer

Hi there and welcome to Ask Alex,

We are sorry to hear that you are feeling embarrassed about your scoliosis but glad to hear that you are not in pain. It’s understandable that you are worried about it preventing you from doing the things you love.

It sounds like your family members are concerned for your safety and comfort. Unfortunately, Ask Alex couldn’t say for sure if you should play volleyball or sports, however you have been very brave contacting us, what would it be like for you to contact your doctor about this? Do you have a specialist that you are linked in with in relation to your scoliosis? We think it would be best to talk to a specific health professional about what exercises may help and whether to play volleyball. We understand this can be frustrating, but you have the right to help, and medical advice and we hope to you can access the support you need.

Your thoughts and feelings are so important, and it is vital that you have someone you can turn to, reach out to family and friends, and try to use any support available to you. Do you have any trusted adult in your life perhaps that you could possibly talk to about this?
