Answer

Hello, you are very welcome to Ask Pat,

Thank you so much for trusting us with your thoughts. We know it can be difficult, but we also know how great it is for young people to share their problems. Talking about and sharing what is going on for you is a big step forward.

You say that you are unsure why you want to kill yourself. You also mention you have friends and a family that love you, however you still feel alone and depressed.

We are concerned to hear you are feeling suicidal, depressed and alone. If you are having thoughts of suicide, it is understandable that you might feel alone and unable to reach out fearing others may not understand. Help is available though, and reaching out to someone, even though it can seem really daunting, is so important. Our thoughts and feelings are temporary, suicide is permanent. You have the right to feel safe and be happy in life.

We are glad that you recognise that you have friends and family that love you. Have you thought about explaining how you are feeling to your family, a trusted adult, or another person you feel comfortable talking to? This could be an aunt, uncle, teacher, doctor, or school counsellor. You do not have to go through this alone.

It is important for your mental well-being that you get the support you deserve as soon as possible. There are organisations that might be of help to you. www.jigsaw.ie; www.yourmentalhealth.ie; www.spunout.ie; www.pieta.ie; www.aware.ie/information/depression/ are just some websites that you could look at, which mY help you understand what is going on for you or they may be able to offer direction how you can avail of other supports. The Childline website has some articles too, which you can have a read through, www.childline.ie/how-i-feel/; www.childline.ie/how-to-tell-someone-im-having-thoughts-of-suicide/.

If you feel that you cannot talk to anyone around you just now, Childline would really love to hear from you. The Childline Team are waiting for you whenever you would like to talk or chat. You are welcome to talk to Childline by phone on 1800 66 66 66, by text on 50101 or through web chat on www.childline.ie. These services are open 24-hours a day, every day and are free and confidential.

We hope that you find some of the above helpful. Remember you have already made a great attempt in reaching out.

We hope to hear from you soon. Take care of yourself,

Pat
