I had sex for the first time, didn’t use a condom and I'm worried about getting pregnant

Your Question

Hi Alex, I’m 14 and my boyfriend is 17, we had sex for the first time recently and he didn’t use a condom but ‘pulled out’ so is there any chance of being pregnant?

Answer

Hi, thanks for contacting Ask Alex.

You sound like you have some questions around how you could get pregnant from sex without a condom. We think it is really good you are asking these questions so that you can get all the information you need and deserve. We can’t answer this question ourselves, but we definitely can listen to you and talk through all the options available to you. Childline is a free and confidential listening service which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can contact Childline through a telephone service on  1800 66 66 66, text service on  50101  or by web chat which you can access at  https://www.childline.ie/.

Would you feel comfortable speaking to an adult that you trust about sex and the ways that you can get pregnant? We know it can be uncomfortable and difficult to talk to the people closest to us about things like this but opening up, sharing our worries and asking our questions can actually be really helpful. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to someone in your family, would there be another adult you trust that you could speak to about this? This could be someone like a teacher or any adult in your life that makes you feel safe and comfortable.

If you would prefer to speak to someone who doesn’t know you personally then there are some links below that may be helpful to you: www.spunout.ie and https://www2.hse.ie. You can find out how they work and what support they can offer you on their websites. There are some articles around pregnancy on the Childline website which you may also like to read: https://www.childline.ie/i-think-i-may-be-pregnant/;  https://www.childline.ie/pregnancy/; https://www.childline.ie/pregnancy-my-rights-and-options/; as well as https://www.childline.ie/consent/ and https://www.childline.ie/sex-and-consent/.

Remember that at Childline, we are here to listen and support you. We can help you to explore the options that are available to you in your life, to help you in the way that suits you best.

Mind yourself and feel free to contact us again at any time, about anything.
