I get anxious doing activities

Your Question

my parents are always making me do activities I don’t want to do and I talk to them about it and they just laugh and give out to me and make me feel stupid and I feel like I’m being ungrateful but I just hate doing these things and it gives me so much anxiety

Answer

Hi there,

Thanks so much for getting in touch. It can be tough to have thoughts, fears, and feelings running around in our heads, especially when they cause anxiety. So, it’s important we share them to help ourselves understand them a little better.

Have you thought about where this all started? It might help to break down which activities exactly cause you anxiety and discuss them with your parents calmly. It can be difficult when we don’t feel listened to, but hopefully, if you can reach an agreement with your parents and everyone understands each other’s comfort zones, it can be a relief. We are wondering if you have spoken to a friend or another trusted adult about what is going on for you. Talking things through, with someone neutral, can help us to feel better and to see a clearer picture of what is going on, so that you don’t go through this alone.

Here is an article from the Childline website about anxiety www.childline.ie/what-is-anxiety/. You may find it helpful. ISPCC also have some online programmes for teens and parents of teens who have mild to moderate anxiety. You can find out more about them here www.ispcc.ie/guided-digital-programmes/.
