Alex's Answer

How do I tell my mom that she treats me like a robot and it’s hard talking to her?

Your Question

My mum treats me like a robot sometimes. It’s getting harder and harder to talk to her normally. How do I tell her how I feel?

Answer

Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch with the Ask Alex service; we appreciate you taking time to contact us and for trusting us with what’s on your mind.

From what you’ve said, it sounds like there are communication issues with your Mum at the moment. It can be very difficult when we don’t feel heard.

It can be hard to communicate our feelings at times. You might find it helpful to first write down what you would like to say and to choose a time and place where you would like to say it. Remember, choosing the right time to have the conversation with your mum is very important – you won’t be able to have a heart-to-heart if she is distracted by needing to cook or keeping an appointment.  If you find it too tough to talk face-to-face, you could send your Mum a text or write her a letter and give it to her. The key to developing healthy, trusting relationships and communicating effectively with others is to be open and honest with one another.

There is a lot of support out there for young people if they need to talk, Childline is always here for you when you need to chat to someone in a safe and judgement-free space.
