Answer

Hi there, welcome to Ask Alex!

You have been very brave opening up to Ask Alex about a change in your body that you are finding embarrassing.

We would like to let you know that this change is very normal and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Your mum probably has experienced something similar at your age.

As girls get older, their bodies will start to prepare for the start of their periods by making vaginal discharge. This is normal and is due to changing hormone levels. This discharge helps keep the vagina healthy. Normal discharge can have a texture that is thin and slightly sticky or thick and gooey and may appear like a white stain in your underwear when dried. Does this sound like what you are experiencing?

It sounds like puberty has started for you. What do you know about puberty or periods? It is ok and normal not to know much at your age; however, it is important for you to get the right information about what is happening with and in your body as you get older. You have a right to know what is going on with your body as you get older. Do you have a trusted adult in your life you could talk to about this?

Remember, you can always call Childline to chat about anything that is going on for you. You can call for free on 1800 66 66 66 or chat with us through our webchat service by clicking on the purple Messenger circle at www.childline.ie. Everything you chat about is confidential, anonymous and will be received without judgmental.

There are some articles on the Childline website around body changes during puberty, if you would like to have a look. Perhaps you and your mum or another trusted adult could read them together www.childline.ie/about-me/.

We hope some of the above has been helpful. Remember, you can get in touch any time, for any reason. Look after yourself,
Alex
