Answer

Welcome to Ask Pat,

You say you are wondering that if your mom has hit you would you have the right to hit back at her. It sounds like you’re looking for clarity around the situation.

We are very sorry to hear that your mom has hit you. Nobody has the right to hurt you in any situation. In saying that nobody has the right to hurt you, it also means that you do not have the right to hurt others.
An adult hitting a young person is never okay and it is never a young person’s fault. You have the right to get help from an adult that you feel safe to talk about this to. It might be helpful to talk to another family member, teacher, doctor or a school guidance counsellor. If you don’t feel like there is a trusted adult in your life, Childline is always here.

You can talk through your thoughts, feelings and options with Childline. Childline is here 24/7 to listen to you. You can call us on 1800 66 66 66 or chat via our webchat or text service on 50101, phone calls and texts are free. Here at Childline we don’t judge what you say and your chat can stay confidential. It was so brave of you to contact us about this today.

Take Care,
Pat.
