Can I go to a GP if I am under 18

Your Question

Can an under 18 year old go in to a doctor to get checked for an std

Answer

Hi and welcome to Ask Alex.

So, it sounds like you’re asking if you can visit a doctor for an STI test if you’re under 18 years old, is that right?

Well, yes – anyone can visit their GP for all health-related issues. If you are aged between 16-18 years, you don’t need an adult with you at your appointment.

There are also STI clinics at different locations around the country. You can find more information about these here: www.sexualwellbeing.ie/sexual-health/hse-sti-services-in-ireland.html.

It’s really important that we look after our sexual health. You can find more information and advice on sexual health and healthy relationships on the Childline website here www.childline.ie/sexuality-and-relationships/. Another resourceful website is b4udecide.ie/ which you may find helpful.

If you ever find it difficult to talk to someone you know, remember  Childline is available 24/7. You can contact us at 1800 66 66 66 or chat with us online through Live Chat at www.Childline.ie. Childline is a non-judgmental and confidential service, and you can talk openly about your feelings and concerns with us. We are here to listen, support you, and help you explore your options.

We hope you’ve found this information helpful.

Take care of yourself,
Alex
