Hi there, you’re very welcome to Ask Alex!
First of all, thank you for reaching out. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, and we’re really glad you did. From what you’re describing, it sounds like you’re feeling quite unwell and frustrated that your symptoms aren’t improving despite your mom’s efforts with over-the-counter allergy medicine. It’s important to remember that your health and well-being are very important.
In Ireland, all young people under 18 have the right to medical help. If you feel that your symptoms are severe, like whooping cough, and you’re not getting the right treatment, it’s important to get professional medical advice. Sometimes, parents might not realise how serious a situation can be, and that’s ok. They might be doing their best, but it’s also ok to need more than what they’re providing.
It might be helpful to have a calm and honest conversation with your mom. Let her know exactly how you’re feeling, both physically and emotionally. Sometimes, explaining how the current treatment is making you feel worse can help her understand the urgency. If talking to her directly doesn’t help, consider speaking to another trusted adult, like a teacher, school counsellor, or another family member. They might be able to help communicate the seriousness of your situation to your mom.
