Answer

Hi there, welcome to Ask Alex!

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feelings with us. It’s completely normal to feel shy about asking to go to the toilet, especially at school. You’re not alone in experiencing this, and it’s great that you’re looking for help to manage the situation.

First, it’s important to understand that your needs are valid. If you need to go to the toilet, it’s ok to ask. You might try speaking to your teacher privately and explaining that you sometimes need to go urgently. Most teachers will understand and want to help you avoid feeling embarrassed.

Another tip is to plan ahead. Try to use the toilet during break times, even if you don’t feel an urgent need to go. This can help reduce the likelihood of needing to go during class.

If you’re still finding it difficult, it might help to practice what you want to say to your teacher. Sometimes, rehearsing a simple phrase like, “I really need to use the bathroom,” can make it easier when the moment comes. Remember, it’s a common need, and your teachers are there to support you.

If talking to someone at school or at home feels too difficult right now, remember that you can always call the Childline Team. We are open 24 hours a day, every day. You can contact us for free at 1800 66 66 66, or chat with us on Messenger at www.Childline.ie by clicking on the purple chat icon. Our service is non-judgmental and confidential. Take care, and remember, it’s ok to ask for help,
Alex
