Who Gets An Eating Disorder?

No one really knows why people develop an eating disorder.  Some people think it’s biological, some think it has to do with families, and others think it has to do with society or psychological factors.  It can develop slowly as a response to a stressful or upsetting event in a persons life and it can happen really quickly for no apparent reason.

Eating disorders are not usually a conscious choice and people are not usually trying to get attention.  If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder, it can help to talk it through with someone you trust.  A doctor is often the first place to turn to when you’re worried about an eating disorder because it can affect your body in a lot of different ways.

It can be really difficult to admit that you have a problem but when you begin to talk to someone you are taking control of your situation and beginning to change. If you’re not sure where to go, Childline is here 24 hours a day at 1800 66 66 66.
