A therapist or counsellor is someone trained to support people going through difficult times. People go to therapy for a lot of different reasons, and some people go only once to a therapist and others go for a longer time. Some people go through something in their family or have problems in school or are feeling overwhelmed or angry or upset. A therapist is someone trained to listen and help people sort out their feelings and try to feel better.
For a lot of people the first step in finding a therapist is going to see their GP. A GP will be able to recommend a therapist in the area who works with young people. Most therapists respect your privacy and won’t tell anyone else about what a person discusses unless they believe their client may harm themselves. If this is something that worries you, you can always talk to your therapist in the first meeting.
