Teachers ususally want to bring out the best in us and when teachers and students work together they can get really great results. There might be certain classes or subjects that you really enjoy and often times it can also be because you get on well with the teacher. It can be helpful to have a good student / teacher relationship.
On the other hand, you might find you cannot get on with your teacher and we know it’s not always easy to get on with other people. We all have different personalities and it’s normal to find you don’t get on as well with one person as you do with some others. We would never tell you what to do here in Childline as we don’t know everything about your situation. We do know that if you’re finding you are having a really difficult time with your teacher it might help to talk about it with someone. You might have someone in your life you feel comfortable talking with, but you might want to chat about it first with Childline. We’re here 24 hours a day if you do want to have a chat you’re always welcome at 1800 66 66 66.
Getting a new teacher can be a big change. You may feel anxious or nervous or even curious about what the new teacher will be like. You also may feel sad as we miss the old teacher and the way they did things. New teachers also may be as nervous as you are about meeting a classroom of new people. If you have questions about your new teacher it might help to talk to someone about your concerns. Childline can be a good place to start, but you also might feel comfortable talking to your new teacher or your parents or someone else that you trust.
If something is happening and your teacher is hurting you it can be really upsetting and confusing. You might be feeling a lot of different things and it’s ok if you’re not exactly sure how you’re feeling or what to do about what’s going on. No one has the right to hurt you. At school, as well as everywhere else in your life, you have the right to be safe and be happy. If you feel that your teacher is hurting you, in a physical or emotional way then you have the right to tell someone you can trust.
A teacher is a person put in a trusted position in your life. They have no right to abuse this position and hurt you. You have the right to talk to someone who will believe you who will listen and make sure you are kept safe. This person might be another teacher, a principal, a parent, an older sibling or another adult that you trust. If you’re not sure who to tell or what to say you’re always welcome to ring Childline on 1800 66 66 66. We are here to listen and can pass on the information to someone who can help if you’re like that to happen.
