There is no one type of person that abuses someone else. Both men and women abuse and an abuser may be very old or very young. Someone who abuses may have grown up in an abusive family may have problems controlling their anger or coping with stress. Sometimes abusers have a drinking problem or a drug problem. Other times abusers have grown up in a normal family and do not drink or use drugs. It’s hard to identify who an abuser is and why they abuse.
If you are abusing someone else, it’s important to stop. You do not have the right to abuse anyone else. You may be feeling confused and guilty and scared about what will happen to you. By reading this and stopping the abuse you are taking the first steps towards stopping and finding help for yourself and the person you are abusing. We know that it’s not easy.
If you are abusing someone it’s important to know that you can and have, a right to get help around what is happening. Working with a councellor is one way to try sort through your feelings, and help rebuild your life and keep yourself from hurting yourself and others.
