Loads of people use mobile phones to chat with friends and to keep in touch with their families. Some people make phone calls while others prefer to send text messages. Lots of people also have cameras on their phones and can send and receive photographs, music and videos.Texting can be a great way to keep in touch with your friends and family and have long chats or to make quick arrangements. But it’s also important to keep yourself safe while texting.
If you are receiving any unwanted text messages or photos or videos, you have a right to tell an adult you trust and to get support to keep that from happening. It can be really upsetting and scary to be receiving unwanted texts or photos and you might be embarrassed bringing it up with your parents. There might be someone else you trust that you could talk about what’s happening with your mobile phone – this might be a teacher or a principal or an auntie or older brother or sister. It’s important that you know you have the right to talk about what’s happening and to make these unwanted messages stop.
Sometimes people contact their mobile service provider about unwanted text messages, but it is impossible for mobile service providers to monitor ALL the traffic on their network. This means that they can’t really stop people receiving offensive, pornographic or bullying messages on their mobile phones; however, sometimes it can help to let your service provider know about the messages. There might be a way to block a specific number on your network.
