Leaving Home

Moving Out

Most people will leave home at some stage in their lives and start living away from their parents.  Everyone is different, and some people will leave home with they are very young, other will wait till they are much other, and some people will live with their families their whole lives.

Sometimes young people think about leaving home when they aren’t getting on with their parents.  Sometimes it seems easier to leave and move out than to deal with what’s going on with their mum, dad, brother, sister or someone else who lives in the same home.  For other people they feel like they need more space or they are going to another school, university, or have found a job in a different part of the country.

If you’re thinking of leaving home it might be a good idea to think about all the reasons why you are thinking of moving out and what you will need in order to do that safely.  It helps to keep in mind that in Ireland the legal age to move out is 16 but you have to have your parent’s consent. If your parents do not consent, the legal age is 18.
