How to Keep Safe on the Web

The Internet is a great way to have fun and learn about lots of different and interesting things. However, not all websites are safe for children and young people to look at and you have a right to be safe while using the internet. There are some things you can do to make sure the information you view on the internet is safe. It’s helpful to keep in mind that anyone can post things on the internet, and what you read may not be true and it may be offensive to other people.

We can't always believe or trust everything we see or read on the internet. It is important to try to find out the source of the information; check it against other trusted sources, to make sure you know what is true or not true. Nobody is legally responsible for information on the internet; anybody can write anything online. It can be used to spread untrue information, violent, pornographic or offensive material and you may find upsetting material on the internet.

www.webwise.ie is the Internet Safety site of The National Centre for Technology in Education. It may help to answer any questions you have and has lots of information about internet safety.

If you are looking for tips or any information about social networking issues, go to www.watchyourspace.ie . This site advises a Beboer or MySpacer or anyone in a social network, how to stay in control of their Profile and what to do if things go wrong.

www.hotline.ie is the Irish hotline for public to report child pornography and other illegal content on the internet.

If you are unsure about anything you see on the internet, remember you have the right to tell an adult you trust - you and your parents and teachers together might be able to make safe decisions about your internet use.
